The year is 2034 AD, humans and their synthetic creations, androids known as Boomer, coexist in Tokyo. In order to enforce the law on criminal Boomer, the A.D. Police formed a special operation organization calledBrunch.

The protagonist, Yukimura Chizuru is the daughter of a doctor who works in Edo. The father leaves Edo to work as a volunteer doctor and moves to Kyoto without his daughter. As time passes by, Chizuru starts worrying about losing contact with her father, so she decides to go to Kyoto in search of him. On the way, Chizuru is attacked by few criminals and witnesses a fight between an oni and the Shinsengumi. Taking her into custody and saving her, the Shinsengumi debate on what to do with Chizuru when they discover that she is the daughter of the doctor they are also looking for. So they decide to become Chizuru’s protectors and help her look for her father. Lots of events happen while she stays with the Shingensumi, as they discover mysterious secrets and also fight against the Bakumatsu group.

This story takes place during the Heian Period of Japan's history, when evil spirits still resided in the forests, mountains and rivers. This brave woman, aka Kaidoumaru, with a Chinese character Flame tatooed on her upper arm, was one of the Four Devas. Kaidoumaru fights for the honor of her lost love, Minamoto no Raikou, who had sacrified his life in order to protect the capital Kyouto, from the evils deeds of a princess cursed by a malicious ogre. Composed in the form of a series of short stories, this is the story of the travels and observations of the human Kino and the talking motorbike Hermes. Kino and Hermes visit various fantastic countries - a country that can't coexist with others due to the development of telepathy; a country striving to make everything equal, whose residents are extremely united; and so on. Small ripples are formed in the everyday lives of the people living in the various countries by the appearances of the unusual Kino.
